South College adds Doctor of Medical Science to Competency-Based Education programs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 9, 2025

South College continues to expand its Competency-Based Education (CBE) programs and now offers a Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) program available through the CBE model.

The program, structured with working professionals in mind, is designed for completion online and allows students to progress at their own pace by demonstrating mastery of course content. It is believed to be the only DMSc program available through the CBE model.

“We have seen a significant demand for flexible options for professionals pursuing career advancement,” South College Chancellor Steve South said. “Our goal is to offer accessible educational opportunities that enable students to gain expertise and grow in their respective professions.”

The South College DMSc is a post-professional doctorate specifically tailored for Physician Assistants (PAs) seeking advancement in order to further each student’s understanding of healthcare delivery, education, leadership and research concepts. Students may choose to focus on either Instructional Leadership or Healthcare Leadership.

“The DMSc degree is designed to open doors for working PAs to pursue expanded roles in clinical practice, academia, leadership, research, medical sales, advocacy and professional organizations,” said Dr. Michael Patrick, South College CBE president. “Through the CBE model, PAs, and other professionals in CBE program, can enhance their knowledge and skills while balancing career and personal commitments.”

Students in South College’s CBE programs enroll in a six-month subscription-based model and progress at their own pace with the benefit of a faculty mentor and an interactive online environment that fosters collaboration. Since inception, the CBE programs have grown to enroll more than 1,500 students in just over three years.

South College offers multiple CBE programs, including master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral certificates in areas such as nursing; business and technology; education; legal studies; and ministry.
